My name is Liona Theobald and I am 18 year old female racing driver from Hampshire, England.
In the 2024 season I am excited to be racing in the GT Cup Championship (https://gtcup.co.uk) alongside James Townsend with SVG Motorsport (https://svgmotorsport.com). James and I will be racing in the orange number 86 Ginetta G56 GT4 (https://www.ginetta.com/our-cars/g56/g56-gt4/), in class GTH of the Championship.
GT Cup is an exciting next step for me this season with longer races, pitstops and working stronger as a team. Both James and SVG have valuable experience in GT racing and we are looking like a competitive pairing for the upcoming season!
This year I will also continue my studies and development with the Motorsport UK Academy at Loughborough College working hard to achieve my qualifications and goals.
When I am not racing or at college, I work as an ARDS Qualified Instructor at multiple tracks across the UK, including the iconic Silverstone!
Last season I competed in the Ginetta GT Championship (https://www.ginetta.com) with SVG Motorsport (https://svgmotorsport.com). I drove a Ginetta GT Pro and within the championship and team, I was the only female! Within both I always felt included and loved the diverse paddock that was created. Being a female, I always strive to push forward females in motorsport and inspiring girls that they can do what they want, even in a male dominated industry!
The Ginetta GT Pro is a V6 3.7LTR 310BHP engine giving a top speed of 140MPH!
In the 2023 season, I finished 6th overall in the Championship standings.
In addition to Ginetta GT Pro, I did a guest round in Caterhams with PT Motorsport in the class Sigma 135. This was a completely different racing technique and experience compared to Ginettas. Throughout the very wet weekend, I achieved a top 10 finish in my first race out of 30+ cars!
In 2023, I continued my studies and development with the Motorsport UK Academy moving onto my second, and final year of the course.
In the 2022 season, I competed in Ginetta Juniors with Assetto Motorsport. This season was MY first full season in racing and it was the biggest learning curve I have come across. Every time I went on track I was learning and improving! Overall, I finished 23rd of 31 drivers.
During the 2022 I raced all over the UK from Thruxton to Knockill and even at the iconic Silverstone! This season was especially amazing due to being a support package to BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) allowing our races to be live-streamed on ITV4!
In addition to Ginetta Juniors, at the end of the season I did a guest round in Ginetta GT5 with Elite Motorsport. This was a good step up due to slick tyres and more power. I enjoyed this weekend and also got a top 10 finish out of 21 cars!
In 2022, I got selected as 1 of only 20 athletes on Motorsport UK's Academy Programme. (https://www.motorsportuk.org/the-sport/motorsport-uk-academy/). This is an elite academy for drivers to study at Loughborough College and take part in many driver specific days. With the college we visit IZone, Bicester and Porsche Human Performance. In addition, we achieve a BTEC in Motor Vehicle, Sport and Esports as well as our DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) qualification.
In the 2021 season, this is when I first stepped foot in a race car! I did a handful of tests days at Blyton Park, Ginetta's own race track. I then entered my first race weekend, Ginetta Junior Winter Series. This weekend consisted of 2 days of racing and the seat time gave me valuable experience for the 2022 season! Learning in wet and dry conditions, I completed my first race weekend!
Since 2019 I have been a member on Farnborough District Motor Club (FDMC). With FDMC have competed in many autosolos all over the South of England. I compete in a Mini Cooper that I run with my dad for some fun on the weekends! It is an enjoyable and competitive club where I started my motorsport journey and is accessible for any ages and any cars!
With FDMC I have also demonstrated at the British Motor Show for 2 years in my Mini Cooper. Many people came to see all the action of an auto solo and how it is executed!
In addition, since I was 13 until 16 I was part of the Under 17 Car Club (U17CC) The U17CC prepares you for the road from the age of 11! Using locations all over the UK, qualified instructors help you progress and learn. While I was part of the club, I drove over 50 vehicles including HGVs and Buses!
